Retched Rich Guitars

Recycled, up-cycled, renewed creations

Retched Rich creates custom designed guitars from worn, out of use surfboards.  Recycling and repurposing go into many aspects of these creations.  Each guitar has a unique design and style bent out of the boards shape, its history and maybe even a playing style.   All boards come with a story about the history of its beginning, and we hope this leads you too a creative ending, maybe to your new tune?

These purpose-bent guitars play just like any other guitar.   Some players even like them better because of the lighter weight.  Check out some of the videos and see for yourself.   Do you have a board in mind?  Contact Rich for a custom guitar or bass using your own surfboard.

Repurposed Surfboards

A surfboard is a narrow plank used in surfing. Surfboards are relatively light, but are strong enough to support an individual standing on them while riding an ocean wave.

They were invented in ancient Hawaii, where they were known as papa he’e nalu in the Hawaiian language, they were usually made of wood from local trees, such as koa, and were often over 460 cm (15 ft) in length and extremely heavy.[1][2]

Major advances over the years include the addition of one or more fins (skegs) on the bottom rear of the board to improve directional stability, and numerous improvements in materials and shape.

Modern surfboards are made of polyurethane or polystyrene foam covered with layers of fiberglass cloth, and polyester or epoxy resin.

Each year, approximately 400,000 surfboards are manufactured.

About Rich

I really cannot tell you exactly when or why I mysteriously discovered this idea to combine surfboards and guitars into something new and unique.  This new creature of fun came in just as much of a surprise to me as it was to others.  I guess when you follow a path and love two things as much as I love music and surfing, maybe it is inevitable, like chocolate and peanut butter.

Recycling really is not for fun and it is something of substance that our entire world needs. I concede the attraction to up cycling it is just that this is something different for me, it just works out that its also environmental.  First off, selfishly it is two things that I love to do and have done for many decades. Secondly and opposite to the above mentioned is the material, and how it is cool and current in an artistic fashion.  A surfboard or guitar by itself is considered art, right and when you add the history of both into this mix then we are jamming on that killer wave or the vibe of that big show.  This was a fun manipulation that turned into something friends and family had a hoot playing and listening too. These look great on the wall as a feature piece or just to jam out with the band. As for now, I am of a small group of people that can say their guitar got barreled so deep and then go on and play some Jimmy.
